Fast Food - A Gross Reality

I cannot believe that regardless of the time of day, it’s a sure bet that you can spot long lines of cars at drive-through windows and people crowding “restaurants” during business hours.

I use the term restaurant loosely, because what is served in the average fast food joint is by no means even close to a well balanced meal. From mystery meats to over-processing, from excessive amounts of sodium to calories galore… and not to mention that “What You See” (on menus and advertising) is CERTAINLY NOT “What You Get”.

The following are links to the Nutritional Information of the top US Fast Food Chains. Some of the values are surprisingly high:
McDonald’s
Burger King
Taco Bell

While may argue that some of the food is quite tasty, I hope these companies are faced with increased pressure to improve the quality of ingredients and nutritional value. So many people eat fast food as part of their routine - children, teens and adults alike. The effect on the waistline of the country is quite painfully obvious. Every change makes a difference, regulation should ensure the fast food industry makes a significant change.

Morgan Spurlock produced a great, award winning, documentary on the effects of consuming nothing but McDonald’s for 30 days back in 2004 . If you haven’t already seen this documentary, I highly recommend you watch it.

“Super Size Me” is one man’s journey into the world of weight gain, health problems and fast food. It’s an examination of the American way of life and how we are eating ourselves to death. Filmmaker Morgan Spurlock unravels the American obesity epidemic by interviewing experts nationwide and by subjecting himself to a ‘McDonald’s only’ diet for thirty days straight. His Sundance award-winning feature is as entertaining as it horrifying as it dives into corporate responsibility, nutritional education, school lunch programs and how we as a nation are eating ourselves to death.

In closing, here are a few pictures to further make the point. Nobody should be putting this into their bodies! I can understand the convenience and appealing price, but its a trade off I am not willing to make! YUCK!
