The Checker Shadow Illusion

This illusion, created by Edward H. Adelson is quite amazing. I had to verify in Photoshop before I was convinced. Hard to believe, but its true!

The squares marked A and B are the same shade of gray.

The full explanation can be found here, but in essence this has to do with the fact that our brain is trying to assign and determine a color/shade for the checker in the the shadow of the cylinder. After several attempts to paraphrase and understand the reason, you’ll just have to read for yourself to understand. However, a picture is worth a thousand words, so here goes the visual proof:
