Reef Tank Project
The inspiration to start a blog came from this project I’m working on. I figured, if I’m going through these steps and organizing my thoughts and plan I might as well post my progress and share it!
My fascination with animals dates back to the earliest memories I have. From collecting bugs and my mother finding them in my pockets, sometimes after laundry, to having endless numbers of dogs, cats, hamsters, fish, mice as well as some farm animals.
In recent years I’ve limited my pets to cats, first and foremost because I love cats, but also because as people who travel a lot and are constantly out of the house any other pets would be too difficult. Growing up I also always had aquariums. Marine biology was a field of great interest and I spent countless hours setting up, cleaning, maintaining and enjoying small and large tropical fish tanks, ponds and even tanks dedicated to tadpoles, microorganisms and some other strange creatures!
Scuba diving is great passion of mine. My wife happens to be even more of a diving freak than I am, and actually I got certified about 4 years ago, right around the time we started dating. Lets just say she was the driving force for my taking the plunge - no pun intended
- and now I have a best friend, wife and dive buddy all in one!
So the project I’m working on - like the title of the post suggests, yet I have failed to get to - is setting up a salt water fish tank in our home and recreate a mini Coral Reef. This is no small undertaking. Both in the planning and logistics involved but also the time and money needed.
When I had the fresh water / tropical tanks, I had mastered the variables and successfully kept fish, vegetation and water in great conditions and even had fish reproduce in my tanks. However, salt water tanks are a whole different beast. I’m in the process of getting educated, informed and prepared for the project that will bring in a part of the ocean to our living room.
